A Life Rooted in the Hive
Founder and owner Matt Strong began beekeeping with his family in his backyard, eventually expanding his practice into a statewide network of beekeepers, farmers and enthusiasts. Through Bear Canyon Honey, he has helped grow a community centered on education, stewardship and a deeper understanding of pollinators. Our connection with Matt came through our longtime beekeeper Lara Lovell and the Albuquerque Beekeepers Association, rooted in a shared respect for the craft and ecosystem.
From Orchard Blooms to High Desert Fields
Bear Canyon Honey manages hives across New Mexico, from Taos to Las Cruces and throughout the Middle Rio Grande Valley. In the south, bees pollinate fruit and pecan orchards in early spring, playing an essential role in agricultural production before native bees become more active later in the season. Alongside commercial pollination, Bear Canyon also maintains backyard hives, helping individuals and communities engage more directly with bees and seasonal cycles.
Their approach emphasizes sustainability, education and careful stewardship of the land, including attention to habitat loss, pesticide use and hive health. This work supports both managed and native pollinators while helping maintain balance across New Mexico’s agricultural landscapes.
Our Honey Collection
Together with Bear Canyon Honey, we created a collection that reflects the distinct flavors of New Mexico honey. Our New Mexico Honey is pure, raw honey sourced from hives across the state Lavender Honey blends raw honey with a touch of our lavender hydrosol for a soft floral note unique to Los Poblanos. Red Chile Honey has all of the natural sweetness of our raw honey with a spicy kick of New Mexican red Chile. Raw and unfiltered, each honey preserves natural enzymes, antioxidants and pollen, resulting in a complex flavor shaped by the native flora and season.
