From field to fragrance: blending essential oils
Scent has the rare ability to ground us in place and time. A breath of lavender can recall summer fields. A trace of cedar brings to mind rain-soaked mountains and high desert air. At Los Poblanos, fragrance is never an afterthought. It is an expression of the land, the plants that grow here and the hands that transform them.
Our essential oil blends are created using pure plant materials, thoughtfully combined to reflect both the character of New Mexico and the restorative power of botanicals. These blends are the foundation of our candles, botanical fragrances, mists and handmade bar soaps, offering an alternative to synthetic scents that is both more nuanced and more connected to nature.
Why botanical blends matter
Synthetic fragrances are often designed for consistency and intensity, built from laboratory-created aroma compounds that can overwhelm the senses. Essential oil blends behave differently. Because they are derived directly from plants, their aromas are layered, subtle and alive, evolving on the skin and in the air.
Botanical scents also offer a more mindful approach to fragrance. Essential oils carry the natural aromatic compounds of flowers, trees and resins, many of which have long been associated with calming, clarifying or grounding effects. When blended with care, they invite a quieter, more intentional sensory experience, one that supports daily rituals rather than overpowering them.
Collaboration and creativity
The heart of our fragrance program is our long-standing collaboration with Christa J. Obuchowski, a botanical perfumer, distiller and educator whose work is rooted in plant medicine and traditional extraction methods. Christa has spent more than two decades studying how scent can support wellbeing, guided by her background in biodynamic gardening, aromatherapy and global plant traditions.
Together, we developed scent profiles that honor the integrity of each plant while creating balanced, wearable blends. This process begins with raw botanicals, many of them grown or gathered in New Mexico, and continues through small-batch distillation, maceration and careful blending. Each fragrance is shaped slowly, allowing the plants themselves to guide the final composition.

From field to fragrance
Our distillation process is as much ritual as technique. Lavender, harvested by hand in the early morning, is distilled on the farm using traditional copper alembic stills. As steam rises through the freshly cut flowers, it captures their essential oils before cooling and separating naturally into oil and hydrosol.
These essential oils form the backbone of our blends, each one reflecting the season, the soil and the care taken at every step. They are never masked or diluted by synthetic additives, allowing their natural complexity to remain intact.
